John Henry Newman - Doctor of the Church

This week a bolt from the blue: The Vatican announced that Pope Leo had agreed to declare St. John Henry Newman a Doctor of the Church!

The idea that Newman should be declared a Doctor is not a new one. I've heard it being spoken of for years but I had no idea that it was in the works. At least, I assume that this week's announcement is the culmination of a process of discernment. Either way, it is a great moment for Newmanites, the Congregation of the Oratory, the English Church, and for Catholics in general. Starting with myself, I hope and pray that it leads to a renewed interest in his life and work.

'Starting with myself'? Some months ago, I started reading Ian Ker's magisterial biography of him. Again. I have made several attempts at reading the book and always got distracted by something else. I'm afraid the same thing happened this time. I'm going to pray that this great news will inspire me to continue with it.

Why a Doctor? Simply, Newman was a deep thinker whose insights have helped shape the Church through Vatican II of which he is regarded as a precursor. That makes him a man for our time as well as his own.
