This quotation is currently on my mind. The Faith as a love affair. Well, we are in relationship with Jesus, I guess; indeed, with the Holy Trinity, so it makes sense to see ourselves as lovers with the Divine.
But it also feels awkward somehow, because - to me, anyway - a love affair is a loose space where you, if not break rules, then potentially bend them in pursuance of the beloved and in the sharing of that love.
The Catholic Faith, by contrast, feels a bit more rigid due to the importance it gives to right doctrine.
Maybe my view of love affairs is too dominated by unrealistic films and books. Chesterton's words, however, have a ring of truth about them, and I hope I get the chance to ponder them more in the next few days.
